Why I Created the School & Educator Support Guide

When a child is living with congenital heart disease, the hospital is only one part of their world.

Eventually, every child returns to school.

They walk back into classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds carrying experiences most of their classmates cannot imagine. Some have gone through open heart surgery. Some are managing fatigue or ongoing medical care. Some are simply trying to regain a sense of normal life after spending time in hospitals.

For many parents, the return to school can feel both hopeful and frightening.

They wonder if teachers will understand their child’s limitations. They worry about physical activity, fatigue, missed classes, and whether their child will feel different from everyone else.

Over time, as I listened to families affected by congenital heart disease, I began to see how important the school environment becomes in a child’s recovery and emotional well being.

School is not just a place where children learn academic subjects.

It is where they build friendships.
It is where confidence grows.
It is where childhood continues.

When educators understand the realities children with congenital heart disease may face, small acts of awareness and flexibility can make an enormous difference.

A compassionate teacher.
An understanding school nurse.
A classroom environment built on kindness and inclusion.

These things help children feel safe and capable again.

That is why I created the School & Educator Support Guide.

The guide was designed to help families and educators build a shared understanding. It offers clear insight into the challenges children with congenital heart disease may experience in school and provides practical guidance for creating supportive learning environments.

My hope is that this guide helps bridge the gap between medical realities and everyday school life.

Children living with congenital heart disease deserve not only excellent medical care. They deserve classrooms where they feel included, supported, and able to grow alongside their peers.

Every step toward understanding helps build a world where children with congenital heart disease are supported not only in hospitals, but in every place where their lives unfold.
