A Book for Every Child with CHD
Written directly to the child living with congenital heart disease, this book does not offer silver linings. It does not ask anyone to be brave. It sits beside the reader and tells them the truth about who they are.
The scar. The fear nobody talks about. The particular tiredness of always being called strong. The heartbeat that kept going when the world held its breath.
For the waiting room. The hospital bag. The nightstand. The hard nights when everything feels like too much.
About the Book
I have been thinking about you for a long time. Not you specifically, maybe. But the child you are. The one who knows things about hospitals that children should not have to know. The one who has a word in their life, a big medical word, that sits in the center of everything like a stone in a stream, and all the water of ordinary life has to move around it.
This is not a book that will fix anything. It will not make the appointments easier or the scars disappear or the fear go quiet on the nights it decides to be loud. What it will do, I hope, is sit beside you. The way a good friend sits beside you. Not trying to talk you out of what you feel. Not handing you a silver lining. Just present. Just close. Just saying: I know. I see you. You are not alone in this.
There is no wrong way to receive something that was made for you. This was made for you.
For the Grown-Ups
You know the particular silence of a car ride to a hospital before the sun comes up. You know what it feels like to sign a form that gives someone permission to operate on the heart of the person you love most in the world. You know the waiting room.
This book was written for the child in your life. But some of these pages will find you too. That you will read certain lines and feel something you have been carrying for a long time finally get named. If that happens, let it. You are allowed to be moved. You are allowed to need this as much as they do.
You can read it together, out loud, slowly. You can give it to them and say nothing, just leave it where they will find it. You can place it in a hospital bag, on a nightstand, in the hands of a child who is about to go through something hard. It will meet them there.
Inside the Book
Chapter 01
Different
You knew before anyone told you. Different is not the same as wrong.
Chapter 02
Marked
Your scar is not a flaw. It is the proof that you were worth fighting for.
Chapter 03
Small
Small is not what you are. Small is just what it felt like on the hard days.
Chapter 04
Loud
Your heart has never been quiet. Even when you were.
Chapter 05
Afraid
Fear, in you, is not weakness. Fear, in you, is memory.
Chapter 06
Held
You have never, not once, gone through anything alone.
Chapter 07
Questions
Some of your questions are not questions at all. They are feelings wearing the shape of one.
Chapter 08
Tired
Being tired is not the opposite of being strong. It is the proof of it.
Chapter 09
Still
Still is not empty. Still is full. You learned what it costs. You know what it is worth.
Chapter 10
Brave
Brave is not the absence of fear. Brave is the kid who is afraid and shows up anyway.
Chapter 11
Seen
I see the one underneath the brave face. And what I see is someone who deserves to be seen.
Chapter 12
Yours
This body is yours. This life is not a copy of something. It is an original.
Chapter 13
Strong
Your strength does not raise its fists. It sits in a hard chair and breathes and waits.
Chapter 14
Beating
Right now, while you are reading this, your heart is beating. That is everything.
Chapter 15
Enough
You have always been enough. Not when life gets easier. Now. As you are.
Chapter 16
Different.
Different, in you, was never something to apologize for. Different, in you, is the whole story.
You are not behind. You are not broken. You are not less. You are someone who was asked to carry something real. And you carried it.
